There is always a first time…
I’m always intrigued by odd projects. I was asked a while ago if I could help do something with a couple of old logs left in a backyard. Always up for a challenge, I said sure. These were the garden variety logs left over from storm damage or some such. They’d been sitting a long time. 2 of the logs were maple, oddly, and hadn’t faired well. I cut them open only to find huge wood borers had already decimated the wood. I slabbed the stumps, extracted the wild life, and let them dry for a month. But there was not much hope for these logs. The wood was way past spongy, and there was not much left. The spalting was crazy, but that was about it.
However, there was a log that had a little spunk to it, something about it. I proceeded to clean it up, and stabilize the top and bottom with penetrating epoxy. I then used a marine varnish on the sides. It turned out interesting. I hope that the client likes it, it will make a cute little table in her garden. I thing she wants to plant something in the limb.
Just something different, I guess.
